<image:title>Home - Our Approach</image:title>
<image:caption>Life can throw challenges at us which we all struggle with at times. During these times it is important to recognise that extra support is available. This is where we can help! We understand how confronting it can be to choose a therapist to support you and trust with your mental health concerns. This is a space where we can feel most vulnerable, most unsafe, and at times isolated. Having trust in us as your therapist is an important part of the therapeutic alliance required to move into a space of healing within our sessions. Our commitment to you is that we will honour and respect you for who you are. We will not judge you, - we will be open, caring, empathetic, and supportive through your mental health journey. It is important that you feel throughout this journey that we are by your side to support you - and that you feel seen, acknowledged, and validated. We will use evidence-based therapies and principles to support you in your healing journey. Depending on what the best fit is, this may include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy, Strategic Psychotherapy, or Clinical Strategic Hypnotherapy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is a widely used approach in therapy that focuses on cognitive and behavioural strategies as the central components of therapeutic change. It is generally an intensive and short-term style of therapy (usually between six and twenty sessions) that uses a practical and goal-oriented approach to helping you - the client. As your Cognitive behaviour therapist, I believe that for you to change your emotions and behaviour, you must change your cognitions and the way in which you perceive situations.</image:caption>

<image:title>Depression - It is ok to feel down from time to time. This is a normal part of life, but when emotions such as hopelessness and despair take hold and just won’t go away, you may have depression. More than just sadness in response to life’s struggles and setbacks, depression changes how you think, feel, and function in daily activities. It can interfere with your ability to work, study, eat, sleep, and enjoy life. You may find that just trying to get through the day can be overwhelming.</image:title>
<image:caption>While some people describe depression as “living in a black hole” or having a feeling of impending doom, others feel lifeless, empty, and apathetic. Men in particular can feel angry and restless. However, you may experience depression, when you leave it untreated it can become a serious health condition. It’s important to remember that feelings of helplessness and hopelessness are symptoms of depression, not the reality of your situation. No matter how hopeless you feel, you can get better. By understanding the cause of your depression and recognising the different symptoms and types of depression, you can take the first steps to feeling better and overcoming the problem.</image:caption>

<image:title>Depression - How depressive feelings vary</image:title>
<image:caption>Depression often varies according to age and gender, with symptoms differing between men and women, or young people and older adults. Depression in men Depressed men are less likely to acknowledge feelings of self-loathing and hopelessness. Instead, they tend to complain about fatigue, irritability, sleep problems, and loss of interest in work and hobbies. They’re also more likely to experience symptoms such as anger, aggression, reckless behaviour, and substance abuse. Depression in women Women are more likely to experience depression symptoms such as pronounced feelings of guilt, excessive sleeping, overeating, and weight gain. Depression in women is also impacted by hormonal factors during menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause. In fact, postpartum depression affects up to 1 in 7 women experience depression following childbirth. Depression in teens Irritability, anger, and agitation are often the most noticeable symptoms in depressed teens—not sadness. They may also complain of headaches, stomach aches, or other physical pains. Depression in older adults Older adults tend to complain more about the physical rather than the emotional signs and symptoms of depression: things like fatigue, unexplained aches and pains, and memory problems. They may also neglect their personal appearance and stop taking critical medications for their health.</image:caption>

<image:title>Domestic Violence - When people think of domestic abuse, they often focus on domestic violence. But domestic abuse includes any attempt by one person in an intimate relationship or marriage to dominate and control the other. Domestic violence and abuse are used for one purpose and one purpose only: to gain and maintain total control over you. An abuser doesn’t “play fair.” An abuser uses fear, guilt, shame, and intimidation to wear you down and keep you under their thumb.</image:title>
<image:caption>Domestic violence and abuse can happen to anyone; it does not discriminate. Abuse happens within heterosexual relationships and in same-sex partnerships. It occurs within all age ranges, ethnic backgrounds, and economic levels. And while women are more often victimised, men also experience abuse—especially verbal and emotional. The bottom line is that abusive behaviour is never acceptable, whether from a man, woman, teenager, or an older adult. You deserve to feel valued, respected, and safe. Domestic abuse often escalates from threats and verbal assault to violence. And while physical injury may pose the most obvious danger, the emotional and psychological consequences of domestic abuse are also severe. Emotionally abusive relationships can destroy your self-worth, lead to anxiety and depression, and make you feel helpless and alone. No one should have to endure this kind of pain—and your first step to breaking free is recognising that your relationship is abusive.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I perform Strategic Psychotherapy within my sister practice at Gold Coast Clinical Hypnotherapy. The goal of Strategic Psychotherapy within my practice is to promote a desirable change within you. From a dysfunctional balance (the balance of the problem), you get to identify and construct a new, more appropriate balance of the solution. It all starts with your instinctive reactions to the reality you perceive.</image:caption>

<image:title>Addictions & Dependencies - If the addiction or addictive behaviour fulfills a valuable need, you may find yourself increasingly relying on it. You may use your addiction or undertake an addictive behaviour to calm or energise yourself or make you more confident. You may start abusing substances to relieve pain, cope with panic attacks, or improve concentration at school or work.</image:title>
<image:caption>If you are using your addiction or undertaking an addictive behaviour to fill a void in your life, you’re more at risk of crossing the line from casual substance use or casual behaviour to substance abuse or addictive behaviour. To maintain a healthy balance in your life, you need to have positive experiences and feel good about your life without any substance use or without the addictive behaviour.</image:caption>

<image:title>Anger - Anger can be internalised or externalised and is a normal, healthy emotion, neither good nor bad. Like any emotion, it conveys a message, telling you that a situation is upsetting, unjust, or threatening. If your kneejerk reaction to anger is to explode, however, that message never has a chance to be conveyed. So, while it’s perfectly normal to feel angry when you’ve been mistreated or wronged, anger becomes a problem when you express it in a way that harms yourself or others.</image:title>
<image:caption>You might think that venting your anger is healthy, that the people around you are too sensitive, that your anger is justified, or that you need to show your fury to get respect. But the truth is that anger is much more likely to have a negative impact on the way people see you, impair your judgment, and get in the way of success.</image:caption>

<image:title>Anxiety - It is important for Clients to realise that stress is a normal reaction to danger. It is the body’s automatic fight-or-flight response that is triggered when you feel threatened, under pressure, or are facing a challenging situation, such as a job interview, exam, or first date. In moderation, stress isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It can help you to stay alert and focused, spur you to action, and motivate you to solve problems. But when stress evolves into anxiety and is constant or overwhelming—when worries and fears interfere with your relationships and daily life—you’ve likely crossed the line from being stressed to running anxiety. When we run anxiety for 6 months or more it is recognised with DSM-5 as an Anxiety disorder.</image:title>
<image:caption>Since anxiety disorders are a group of related conditions rather than a single disorder, symptoms may vary from person to person. One individual may suffer from intense anxiety attacks that strike without warning, while another gets panicky at the thought of mingling at a party. Someone else may struggle with a disabling fear of driving, or uncontrollable, intrusive thoughts. Yet another may live in a constant state of tension, worrying about anything and everything. But despite their different forms, all anxiety disorders illicit an intense fear or worry out of proportion to the situation at hand. While having an anxiety disorder can be disabling, preventing you from living the life you want, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health issues and are highly treatable. Once I have helped you to understand your anxiety disorder, there are steps you can take to reduce the symptoms and regain control of your life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Grief and Loss - Grief is a natural response to loss. It’s the emotional suffering you feel when something or someone you love is taken away. Often, the pain of loss can feel overwhelming. You may experience all kinds of difficult and unexpected emotions, from shock or anger to disbelief, guilt, and profound sadness. The pain of grief can also disrupt your physical health, making it difficult to sleep, eat, or even think straight. These are normal reactions to loss—and the more significant the loss, the more intense your grief will be.</image:title>

<image:title>Grief and Loss - Coping with the loss of someone or something you love is one of life’s biggest challenges. You may associate grieving with the death of a loved one—which is often the cause of the most intense type of grief—but the ending of anything that is significant to us can cause grief, including:</image:title>
<image:caption>Divorce or relationship breakup Loss of health Losing a job i.e. being made redundant Loss of financial stability A miscarriage Retirement Death of a pet Loss of a cherished dream A loved one’s serious illness Loss of a friendship Loss of safety after a trauma Selling the family home Grieving is a highly individual experience; there’s no right or wrong way to grieve. How you grieve depends on many factors, including your personality and coping style, your life experience, your faith, and how significant the loss was to you. While loss affects people in different ways, many of us experience the following symptoms when we’re grieving. Just remember that almost anything that you experience in the early stages of grief is normal—including feeling like you’re going crazy, feeling like you’re in a bad dream, or questioning your religious or spiritual beliefs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Coaching focuses on the present/future and taps into your goals and desired outcomes, drawing on your potential, strengths, and skills to maximise fulfillment in life and work. Even though both therapy & coaching rely on developing awareness and developmental issues, therapy relies on awareness of past experiences to bring about healing in the present, and coaching sheds light on unseen possibilities and strengths thus linking awareness to action. I facilitate both Therapeutic as well as Coaching sessions. So, Life Coaching is for people seeking change in their lives (both personally and professionally) that will result in greater fulfillment both personally and professionally.</image:caption>

<image:title>Procrastination - Procrastination is the act of unnecessarily postponing decisions or actions. For example, if you need to write a report for work, but end up reading the news online even though you know you should be working, that means that you’re procrastinating. Procrastination is often detrimental to people’s ability to successfully pursue their goals, which is evident, for example, in the fact that procrastination is associated with receiving worse grades at school and earning a lower salary at work. Furthermore, procrastination is also associated with a wide range of other issues, such as increased anxiety and a negative impact on our physical and mental health. People often assume that procrastination is simply a matter of willpower, but in reality, the situation is far more complex than that.</image:title>

<image:title>PTSD - Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop following any event that makes you fear for your safety. Most people associate PTSD with sexual assault or battle-scarred soldiers—and military combat is the most common cause in men. But any event, or series of events, that overwhelms you with feelings of hopelessness and helplessness and leaves you emotionally shattered, can trigger PTSD. This may happen especially if the event feels unpredictable and uncontrollable. PTSD can affect people who personally experience the traumatic event, those who witness the event, or those who pick up the pieces afterwards, such as emergency workers and law enforcement officers. PTSD can also result from surgery performed on children too young to fully understand what’s happening to them.</image:title>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62ba3c5edee9b648bfb2cb26/8abc28df-1b27-45ae-8e0e-bbfdf95f65cd/unsplash-image-UYQP_yjpp5Q.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>PTSD - While it’s impossible to predict who will develop PTSD in response to trauma, there are certain risk factors that increase your vulnerability. Many risk factors revolve around the nature of the traumatic event itself. Traumatic events are more likely to cause PTSD when they involve a severe threat to your life or personal safety: the more extreme and prolonged the threat, the greater the risk of developing PTSD in response. Intentional, human-inflicted harm—such as rape, assault, and torture— also tends to be more traumatic than “acts of God,” or more impersonal accidents and disasters. The extent to which the traumatic event was unexpected, uncontrollable, and inescapable also plays a role.</image:title>
<image:caption>Other risk factors for PTSD include: Previous traumatic experiences, especially in early life Family history of PTSD or depression History of physical or sexual abuse History of substance abuse History of depression, anxiety, or another mental illness</image:caption>

<image:title>Sports Excellence - My Sports Performance Coaching & Therapy is focused on an athlete's development as an individual, including personal and therapeutic issues associated with sports performance. For example, sports performance therapy assists athletes with reducing stress and anxiety, overcoming fear of failure and success, and burn-out. We also address interpersonal issues such as family and marital difficulty. In addition, performance counselling may assist with problem prevention, coping skills, relaxation training, decision-making, life management and career planning, therapeutic strategies, and crisis intervention. Ineffective attempts to deal with stress by the athlete can result in the abuse of alcohol and other drugs. Timely assessments and treatment by me can provide athletes with educational programs and information about drugs and substance abuse treatment.</image:title>

<image:title>Sports Excellence - As a Sports performance therapist, I teach the athlete to visualise successfully completing a certain action in a sporting activity. This gives the athlete confidence to complete the maneuver as well as prepare the athlete’s body for the actual maneuver. Depending on the athletes’ requirements I may choose to use either Therapeutic Models or Modern Hypnotherapy. Sports performance counsellors provide a model for athletes to have focus in the job they do and build a career for proficiency and self-actualisation. Fear of failure, anxiety and lack of confidence are some of the issues athletes face on the field, and inconsistency in performance and social withdrawal is strongly recognised as issues that may require the attention of the counsellor in his practice. One of the further concerns is that Athletes' career decisions are often postponed due to the intense level of commitment required by their sports participation. As your Sports performance therapist, I use interventions that focus on development across your lifespan.</image:title>

<image:title>Trauma - If you’ve experienced an extremely stressful or disturbing event that’s left you feeling helpless and emotionally out of control, you may have been traumatized. Psychological trauma can leave you struggling with upsetting emotions, memories, and anxiety that won’t go away. It can also leave you feeling numb, disconnected, and unable to trust other people. When bad things happen, it can take a while to get over the pain and feel safe again. But with these self-help strategies and support, you can speed up your recovery. <image:title>Trauma - Emotional and psychological trauma is the result of extraordinarily stressful events that shatter your sense of security, making you feel helpless in a dangerous world. Traumatic experiences often involve a threat to life or safety, but any situation that leaves you feeling overwhelmed and isolated can result in trauma, even if it doesn’t involve physical harm. It’s not the objective circumstances that determine whether an event is traumatic, but your subjective emotional experience of the event. The more frightened and helpless you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatised.</image:title>
<image:caption>Emotional and psychological trauma can be caused by: One-time events, such as an accident, injury, or a violent attack, especially if it was unexpected or happened in childhood. Ongoing, relentless stress, such as living in a crime-ridden neighbourhood, battling a life-threatening illness, or experiencing traumatic events that occur repeatedly, such as bullying, domestic violence, or childhood neglect. Commonly overlooked causes, such as surgery (especially in the first 3 years of life), the sudden death of someone close, the breakup of a significant relationship, or a humiliating or deeply disappointing experience, especially if someone was deliberately cruel.</image:caption>

<image:title>Couples Therapy - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)</image:title>
<image:caption>From a CBT perspective, couples often come to this work when they find themselves stuck in repeating patterns — the same arguments, the same misunderstandings, or a growing sense of distance. Together, we slow things down and make sense of what’s happening underneath the surface. We look at how each partner’s past experiences, core beliefs, and protective patterns shape the way they think, feel, and respond to each other — especially in moments of conflict. Rather than blaming or taking sides, the focus is on understanding the cycle you’re both caught in. We explore the automatic thoughts, emotional reactions, and behaviours that escalate disconnection, as well as the unspoken needs sitting underneath them. At a pace that feels safe for both of you, we begin to gently shift these patterns — helping you respond to each other with more awareness, flexibility, and care. Over time, this creates space for clearer communication, reduced reactivity, and a stronger, more secure connection.</image:caption>

Modern Hypnotherapy is used in the Therapeutic space and releases control to you (as the client), empowering you to choose to go into a trance, and once in trance to make the changes you choose to make in your life. In contrast to Traditional Hypnotherapy where the practitioner is in control, the Hypnotherapist within Modern Hypnotherapy is just the guide How it can help me Modern Hypnotherapy is used to challenge and overcome concerns such as: Dependencies & Addictions, - such as Smoking, Vaping, Drinking, Pornography, Eating, Gambling, Shopping, Risky Behaviour, Video Games, Sex, Internet, Work, Exercise, Cutting, Spiritual Obsession, etc Depression Anxiety Procrastination Low Self Esteem Phobias Anger Insomnia Post-Traumatic Stress Obsessive & Compulsive Behaviours Post-natal Depression Psycho-somatic pain</image:caption>

<image:caption>The goal of Strategic Psychotherapy within the practice is to promote a desirable change within you. From a dysfunctional balance (the balance of the problem), you get to identify and construct a new, more appropriate balance of the solution. It all starts with your instinctive reactions to the reality you perceive. How can strategic psychotherapy help me? <image:caption>Solution focused therapy supports you through identifying your goals and your strengths. These goals and strengths are the only agents of change used within the approach.
